The most common causes of wrist pain
We constantly use our hands. This makes them especially vulnerable to injuries, particularly overuse injuries. While some injuries are unavoidable, knowing how to care for your hands can help prevent some conditions.
Wrist overuse injuries are most common in groups that engage in physically demanding activities, such as manual laborers and jobs that require computer use or repetitive movements.
Falling onto an outstretched arm is the most common cause of traumatic wrist injuries. A wrist fracture is the most common type of injury caused by falling. As with most injuries, the sooner you treat them, the sooner you will be able to find relief!
Contact one of our physical therapists or occupational therapists at Prairie Rehabilitation in Worthington Avera, Worthington Oxford, Jackson, Tea, Hartford, Harrisburg, Brandon, Sioux Falls, East Sioux Falls, West Sioux Falls and Central Sioux Falls so they can determine what caused the pain and what you can do to resolve it.
There are several possible causes for wrist pain, the most common are:
Carpal tunnel syndrome
If your hands, wrists, or forearms ache on a daily basis, or if typing and holding things has become particularly difficult and uncomfortable for you, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition that causes tingling and numbness in your fingers and hand. Typically, the symptoms are felt in the thumb and index fingers, as well as the middle and ring fingers. For some, the condition will worsen, causing hand weakness and people to drop items.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is frequently associated with overuse and repetitive motion, particularly among construction and manufacturing workers who must lift, grip, and perform forceful wrist motions. Or certain sports such as golf, tennis/pickleball, and rock climbing.
Your carpal tunnel is a narrow channel located on your wrist under your palm that is about the width of your thumb. It safeguards the median nerve as well as the tendons that allow you to bend your fingers. Excessive pressure on the median nerve causes crowding and irritation of the carpal tunnel, making it difficult for it to function correctly.
Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain and tingling sensations when moving the arm, hand, or wrist. The pain usually spreads to the fingers, hand, wrist, or forearm. Overuse of the wrist and regular, repetitive motions, such as typing or writing, can lead to this condition.
Arthritis
There are many different types of arthritis, but one thing they all have in common is that they cause mild to severe pain in the joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
Arthritis progression leads to mobility limitations and loss of function This condition can affect anyone at any age, but it is most common in the hands of aging adults. It causes swelling, stiffness, weakness, and inflammation, making it difficult to grasp items or move the hands, wrists, and fingers comfortably.
The hand is vulnerable to both traumatic and repetitive stress injuries. A thorough evaluation is the first step toward determining the nature of your injury and developing a successful treatment plan.
