Voice Disorders

Issues such as a raspy voice, a voice that is too soft, or other voice difficulties can negatively impact a person’s social or professional performance.  These difficulties may be due to vocal fold dysfunction caused by abnormal growths on the vocal folds, neurological damage, Parkinson’s disease, or any number of neurological disorders. Prairie Rehab’s team of Speech-Language Pathologists often referred to as Speech Therapists, are trained to evaluate and treat a variety of voice disorders. Our Sioux Falls, SD area and Minnesota certified Speech Therapists are trained in the LSVT Loud Program. LSVT LOUD is a program that helps improve vocal intensity. LSVT LOUD may be done in conjunction with LSVT BIG, which is an intensive, effective, one-on-one treatment created to help people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other neurological conditions. Our therapists address walking, balance, and other activities of daily living (for example, writing, dressing, and getting up from low chairs), or even job-related tasks.

Some people may seek speech therapy to change the pitch of their voice to more closely reflect their gender.  There are different options that may help and Prairie Rehab’s Speech-Language Pathologists are here to help you achieve these changes.

For transgender individuals, surgery and hormone treatment may change how your voice sounds, but you may also choose to have voice and communication therapy to work on not only your voice but also your overall communication.  The Speech Therapist will listen to your vocal pitch, or how high or deep your voice sounds, as well as listen to the words you use and watch how you communicate nonverbally.

The following are some of the things about your voice and communication that you may work on in therapy:

  • Pitch, or how high or low your voice sounds
  • Resonance, or the quality of the sound of your voice
  • Intonation, or rhythm of your speech
  • Rate, or how fast or slowly you speak
  • Nonverbal sounds, such as coughing or laughing
  • Language, or the words you use
  • Speech sound production, or how clearly you say sounds
  • Pragmatics, or the social rules of communication

It can take some time to change your voice and the way you talk with others, but Prairie Rehab’s speech therapists can help you make the changes that will help you feel good about the way you communicate, in both social and professional situations.
